We’d like to welcome Chevening to the Red Onion ranks. Chevening is a global academic awards program, supported by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and partner organisations.

We created this brand new magazine from scratch and we’d like to share with you some insight into the design decisions that were made.

We used a simple colour way throughout
This is not a large magazine, but it’s packed with features. To keep the navigation clear and uncluttered we settled on simply a black and deep blue colour way. We also occasionally used bright yellow to highlight key elements on a page.

Used for specific reason
Colour has been used as a bar along the top of certain pages to create a section. It’s been used for mini headlines on the cover.

Makes the images pop
By using colour carefully – it ensures the full colour images really stand out.

Style and clarity
We wanted to keep this easy to read for an academic and international audience, for whom English may not be their first language.
